Background
In the 1870's two men competed against each other: Elisha Gray and Alexander Graham Bell, to create a device that would transmit the human voice. Bell began by attempting to solve a major focus of telegraph innovations at the time, researching methods to send several telegraphs simultaneously over a single line. He came up with the harmonic telegraph, which was taken up by a Gardiner Hubbard. Bell agreed to help Hubbard with the harmonic telegraph as long as he could still attempt to transmit the human voice on his own time.
