Background
At age 24, George Eastman was supposed to go on a trip to Santo Domingo but couldn't document the trip because the photography equipment was too costly. He became determined to create an inexpensive camera for everyday people. Eastman studied and developed a gelatin-based paper film and device for coating dry plates 1879. In 1881 Eastman formed a partnership with Henry A. Strong and together started the Eastman Dry Plate Company. And in 1885 William Hall Walker and Eastman invented a roll holder that would allow the camera to be smaller as well as cheaper.
