In the early 1900s, cars, or really any automobile at all, represented a status symbol, it was a toy for the rich. A luxury item not very many could afford. Back then, every single automobile was built painstakingly by hand.
Henry Ford built his "1st car" in 1896: the quadricycle. He also helped design the Detroit Automobile Company's first commercial automobile: the delivery wagon. In 1906, Ford started up what would eventually become the Ford Motor Company in a building on Piquette Avenue in Detroit. That's where the magic happened...
